CHOGM - The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting - is a meeting held every two years, where leaders of Commonwealth countries meet to discuss global and Commonwealth issues, and to agree on collective policies and initiatives.
Nominated by the Commonwealth governments and serving a maximum of two four-year terms, the Secretary General is responsible for the management of the Commonwealth Secretariat and publicly represents the Commonwealth. Kamalesh Sharma is the current Secretary General of the Commonwealth.
Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena is the Current Commonwealth Chair-in-Office. The Chair-in-Office is the Head of Government of the Commonwealth country that hosts the CHOGM. The two-year role comes into effect at the start of the CHOGM. The next Chair-in-Office will be Malta’s Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat.
Anyone interested in participating in any of the Forums requires accreditation, which can be applied for by following the instructions on the Accreditation Section of the CHOGM website homepage. The Accreditation Section will come live at later stage.
The CHOGM is restricted to the Heads of Government and a restricted number of aides. Besides from the meetings for the Heads of Government and Foreign Ministers, which is reserved for official delegations, there are a number of forums which enable the participation of people from all the Commonwealth and non-Commonwealth countries. These are the Business Forum, the People’s Forum, the Women’s Forum and the Youth Forum. More information about each forum can be found on the official website in the Events Section.
The Commonwealth comprises of 53 independent sovereign states. It is home to 2.2 billion citizens, 60% of whom are under the age of 30. The Commonwealth includes a wealth of diversification, people and cultures.
